What do our graduates have to say?

Variety of work – Courtney, Bachelor of Economics

Treasury graduates 2008

The experience I’ve gained from my grad year has exceeded my expectations. I’ve worked on budget papers for the state budget, helped draft legislation to go through parliament, reviewed the implementation of responsible gambling, and worked on forecasting growth for the Queensland economy into the coming years.

Each of my experiences has been completely different and exposed me to the diversity of work within Treasury. I’ve had constant support from my supervisors and colleagues and have gained skills that will set me up for the rest of my career.

Study options – Rakith, Bachelor of Economics

During my grad year I had the privilege of working in two different teams at the Office of Economics and Statistical Research (OESR). During my short stay at the Microeconomic analysis team, I was involved in estimating direct impacts of climate change on irrigated agriculture, grazing, and livestock industries for the Gaurnaut Climate Change review. Next, as a member of the economic accounts team, I was involved with the compilation of Queensland State Accounts, and most recently, I have been working on calculating Productivity estimates for Queensland.

OESR has been very open to the idea of further study, and are willing to provide financial support through their SARAS program and to provide flexible work arrangements according to my study schedule.

Treasury has opened up a diverse range of career opportunities for me, and I’m sure the experiences I have gained in my grad year will hold me in good stead for years to come.

Relocating – Miranda, Bachelor of Law

Towards the end of my time at university, I looked at many graduate programs available for law graduates, yet I only applied for one, the Queensland Treasury graduate program. It was the only program that 'jumped off' the computer at me, and as I looked into it further I began to feel that it was the best opportunity for me.

As I was located in Cairns and still studying, as well as having a part-time job, I was unable to travel to Brisbane for the recruitment process. Queensland Treasury, however, provided me with alternative methods to complete the recruitment process. I conducted all work tests online and was able to have my interview via telephone.

Moving to Brisbane from Cairns was a bit of a shock to the system, however, I have found Brisbane to be a great city. It is small enough to avoid getting lost in that 'unfamiliar big city', but it provides an array of things to do for all people.

The Queensland Treasury graduate program certainly made the move a lot easier. Not only was I provided with transport and relocation assistance, I also met some great people. I believe that Queensland Treasury has given me the challenges, the experience and the skills that I need to succeed in my career.

Supervisors – Michael, Bachelor of Arts/Law

When I was first asked to provide an account of the positive experiences I’ve had with my supervisors, I was actually a bit unsure of how to start. This is not because I couldn’t think of any positive experiences, but because there have been just too many for me to know where to begin.

I have felt welcomed, valued and supported since before I even officially started as a graduate. My supervisors have always been approachable and have provided me with plenty of training and guidance and have ensured that I have been involved in the broad cross-section of work dealt with by our department.

Outside of the work environment, my supervisors have provided great company and plenty of good times and laughs over the last year. Without a doubt, my integration into the public service has been made all the more effortless and enjoyable thanks to the quality of my supervisors.

Career Progression – Melinda, Bachelor of Arts/Law

Treasury graduates 2008

The Treasury graduate program has provided me with an opportunity to be exposed to a variety of work units within the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) whilst also ensuring that I continue my professional development and post graduate university studies.Throughout my grad year, I have had continual support from the Graduate Coordinator and work colleagues and was fortunate enough to secure the opportunity to perform a more senior role which allowed me to take on more responsibilities and further develop my investigation skills. I believe that the graduate program is a great introduction to a career with Queensland Treasury.
