Count Indigenous communities in for Census 2006
Want a better future for Queensland? Count me in for Census 2006. The Office of Economic and Statistical Research (OESR) ensured this message reached all Queenslanders, including Indigenous communities, as part of its Census 2006 Awareness Campaign.
OESR coordinated the awareness campaign and undertook an extensive community visit program to promote Indigenous participation in the national Census of Population and Housing in 2006. This program involved visiting all 37 Queensland Indigenous communities between August 2005 and July 2006. The visits involved face-to-face meetings with Indigenous community leaders, Elders, councillors and other community members. OESR also gave presentations to community representatives from health centres, schools, the Community Development Employment Program, community justice groups, art and cultural centres, and alcohol relief centres.
During the visits, OESR distributed translated posters, brochures and other promotional material about the Census. Other communication activities complemented the visit program and included community service announcements, radio interviews, and Indigenous press and radio advertising. OESR also specially translated their radio advertisement into Creole for the Torres Strait.
In 2006-07, OESR plans to present statistical profiles to Indigenous communities and include Census statistics in these presentations.
