Spreading the word on alcohol management

Strong Community Life is a community education program that celebrates the strengths of Indigenous communities and challenges them to make strong, healthy decisions about alcohol.

The festivals are an initiative of the Liquor Licensing Division. In addition to the events, the campaign includes a series of locally produced radio programs that provide each community with the opportunity to talk about alcohol issues with strong and positive messages from community leaders, service providers, young people and Indigenous heroes.

During the year, former rugby league South Sydney Rabbitohs fullback David ‘The Peach’ Peachey came on board as a Strong Community Life ambassador.

Central Queensland’s Woorabinda community welcomed David and Strong Community Life to town to celebrate their own decision to ‘go dry’ – placing a total ban on alcohol.

Hosted by the Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council, the day included a football clinic hosted by David and former Brisbane Bronco Steve Renouf, and some fast moves from former Brisbane Bullets and NBL star Andre Moore.

In 2008–09, more festivals are planned for Indigenous communities. Broncos skipper Darren Lockyer and North Queensland Cowboys stars Matt Bowen and Jacob Lillyman have already travelled to Doomadgee with David Peachey to meet the locals and spread the Strong Community Life message.
