Business priority Highlights The year ahead

Assist the Queensland racing industry to maintain compliance with the Racing Act 2002 and improve animal welfare and integrity practices and procedures.

Collaborated with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, providing crucial support during the equine influenza outbreak.

Continue to work with racing bodies on animal welfare and compliance issues to reduce the occurrence and damage of future emergent disease outbreak, such as equine influenza.

Assist the Greyhound Racing Authority and Queensland Harness Racing Board to progress corporatisation and achieve approval as control bodies by 1 July 2008.

Assisted the Greyhound Racing Authority and Queensland Harness Racing Board transition from statutory bodies to a new corporate structure, which is expected to bring commercial and corporate flexibility.

On 1 July 2008, Greyhounds Queensland Limited will commence as the control body for greyhound racing, and Queensland Harness Racing Limited as the control body for harness racing.

Monitor control body compliance under the Racing Act 2002.

Reviewed control bodies’ emergency disease preparedness under the Control Body Assessment (CBA) program.

Maintain public confidence in the racing industry by continuing the CBA program.

Investigated complaints lodged with the Office of Racing.

Investigate matters reported and/or identified.

Trained control body staff to identify, manage and respond to conflicts of interest.

Assist control bodies to manage corporate governance issues.

Research, monitor and assess new developments and trends in the racing industry within Australia and overseas.

Assessed impacts of changes to interstate racing legislation.

Develop responses to implications arising from interstate developments.

Provide investigative and analytical services to control bodies.

Ensured public confidence in the integrity of the racing industry by testing samples taken from licensed racing animals for prohibited substances at the Racing Science Centre.

Analyse over 15,000 samples.

Continue to provide advice on drug control and animal welfare issues.
