The Queensland Government provided support for a $60 million Rheinmetall Nioa Munitions shell forging and manufacturing facility in Maryborough.
The facility uses a 1250-tonne hot forging press and computerised machinery to produce 155mm artillery projectiles and metal parts for other munitions. The shells will be used by the Australian Defence Force replacing imported munitions and exported overseas to allied nations.
Up to 100 long-term operational jobs will be created at the plant including engineers, line supervisors, skilled operators, maintenance staff and apprentices.
Rheinmetall Nioa Munitions is a great example of an advanced manufacturing business that is playing a valuable role in building Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities. By choosing to establish its facility in regional Queensland, the company is bringing sustainable, long-term benefit to Maryborough’s local economy.
